Den Gamle By

“Hello, my friends! Yesterday I had such a lovely day at Den Gamle By together with my humans, Wilma and her family. The old streets are beautiful, and there was always something interesting to sniff. We met so many friendly dogs… although one fellow near the ice cream café seemed convinced he was protecting the entire village! He barked, growled and bounced at everyone who dared walk past. I simply thought, “You carry on, dear… I’ll stay over here where it’s peaceful.”

After lots of walking, everyone was ready for a break. Our humans found a little café and enjoyed cold colas while Wilma and I stretched out beside them for a well-earned nap. I think they needed the rest almost as much as we did. A little rain came after during our walking, but I didn’t mind one bit. A few raindrops never hurt anyone, and they made the old cobbled streets look even prettier. Besides, a Golden Retriever is supposed to like getting a little wet!


At the end of the day, poor Wilma finally reached a place where she felt comfortable enough to pee… and goodness me… she must have been saving it since the Middle Ages! I politely looked the other way. Every lady deserves a little privacy. It was one of those days that wasn’t about rushing from one thing to another. It was about slow walks, little naps, good company, and making happy memories together.

Those are my favourite adventures.

“Woof everyone! Yesterday I travelled back in time! No, not in a magical machine… my humans took me to Den Gamle By in Aarhus, where whole streets look exactly like they did hundreds of years ago. It felt like walking into a storybook! The museum welcomes dogs in the streets, although we’re not allowed inside the houses, so our humans took turns exploring while one stayed outside with us. That worked perfectly, and we got plenty of cuddles while waiting.

This time we weren’t alone. Our friend Millie came too with her lovely humans! It is always much more fun to sniff an old town with a good friend by your side. And let me tell you… there were dogs everywhere! Big ones, tiny ones, fluffy ones, serious ones… and then …there was The Ice Cream Guardian. I don’t know what flavour offended him, but this dog had apparently declared war on anyone who dared come near the ice cream shop. Every person… WOOF! Every stroller… GRRRR! Every dog… BARK! BARK! BARK! He bounced up and down like popcorn in a hot pan. Honestly, if barking burned calories, he’d have gone home as skinny as a whippet. I decided the safest strategy was to pretend I hadn’t seen him. Sometimes being polite is the bravest thing a lady can do!

Whenever we got thirsty, we found the most stylish drinking station ever… a wooden bucket filled with fresh water under an old-fashioned tap. A wooden bucket! I felt incredibly fancy. Normally I drink from modern bowls, but yesterday I was basically a Victorian lady enjoying refreshments. Very sophisticated indeed.

Every street was so spotless and beautifully kept that I didn’t dare leave even the tiniest little pee. It was all so perfect that I thought someone might frame it as a historical exhibit. So I held it. And held it… And held it… By the end of the visit I was walking with the determination of a dog on a very important mission. The very second we finally left the old village… AAAAAHHHHHHH… The longest… Most glorious… Most satisfying… PEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE…of my entire day! What a relief! I’m fairly certain I watered half of modern Aarhus.

If your humans love history and you don’t mind waiting outside the buildings while they explore, Den Gamle By is an absolutely wonderful place for dogs. There are beautiful streets to stroll through, friendly people, lots of fellow four-legged visitors, fresh water available, horses to admire, and endless things to sniff. One little tip from me: if you’re visiting with a dog, it’s even better to come with family or a group of friends. That way, while some humans explore the historic houses, someone can stay outside with us, so no dog has to be left alone. If you’re visiting on your own or as a couple, it can be a little trickier since dogs aren’t allowed inside the buildings and there is no place to tie us outside

Just remember… Visit the toilet before entering. Trust me on this one!”
