Note how it breaks down: at 33 of the places I'm only welcome outdoors, that is on the grounds between the buildings but not inside the exhibition halls. At 42 I have to be on a leash. That's how it works at Den Gamle By, the Open Air Museum, Hjerl Hede, the Funen Village and Land of Legends Lejre – and it's plenty for a whole day.

There are museums underground too: the chalk mines at Mønsted, Daugbjerg and Thingbæk. And a good deal of history in the open air – the Viking museums at Lindholm Høje, Fyrkat and Trelleborg, Bork Viking Harbour, Stevnsfort and the Frøslev Camp. Do remember that rules can change – give the place a ring if we're driving a long way.
